One person has been arrested in Pretoria after a fire broke out on a carriage of the Blue Train.

The coach was one of 19 that were involved in a derailment in November.

The coach was awaiting repairs at Transnet’s engineering facility in Koedoespoort in Pretoria when the fire broke out early on Tuesday morning, said Transnet spokesperson Ayanda Shezi.

“Three people were seen fleeing the scene. One person was apprehended by Transnet security personnel and handed over to the police. Two other people are still at large,” said Shezi.

“The coach in question had been taken to Koedoespoort for repairs after being involved in a derailment last November.”

The empty 19-coach train derailed at Union Station Loop in Germiston on Sunday, 7 November at approximately 00:35. No injuries were reported, Transnet said at the time.

According to Shezi, Transnet has almost completed the investigation into the cause of the November derailment.

“[Tuesday’s] incident will not impact the investigations,” Shezi added.

Transnet would also investigate the cause of the fire, according to Shezi.
